With a legendary electric Pokémon—the Archangel of Justice—gliding above them and another carrying them through the water—Air Jordan—Abba Jesus, The Fonz, and All-Terrain Venomoth should have felt that they were saved. But their most difficult battles lay ahead of them.
They had plenty of reason to believe that the Helix Fossil was guiding them on the right path, and that was solidified when they first touched the shoreline of Cinnabar Island. The very moment The Fonz put a foot into the sand, a warm sensation pulsed through him. He was compelled to sprint onto the land and ram himself into a marble boulder. Abba Jesus thought he was suffering a rabid drive to kill himself, but the boulder was made of moonstone. The Fonz was buried by the shattered boulder collapsing onto him, and a minute later, he emerged upright and twice the size. Along with his leather jacket, he had a pair of sunglasses, and his horn and every nail along his arms and legs were made of sharpened marble. When he regained control of his sanity, he looked at Abba Jesus and smiled. “Ayyy! Bird Jesus, from now on you shall refer to me as King Fonz!”
There was little civilization to speak of on the island, only a team of scientists who kept to themselves along the north shore and told them that if they were looking to discover something, they would probably do so down the river. They continued on their way, down a river into a foreign tropical jungle, where many of the Pokémon were recognizable. Abba Jesus saw King Fonz’s newly discovered strength when a pack of Ponytas ambushed them. Just as he spread his wings and took to the sky, his mate had knocked all four of them unconscious with four simple tackles.
Further in, they came upon a tribe of fire-breathing humans who kept several packs of Growlithes. Their grounds were littered with torches and bonfires, so much so that the squad could feel the heat and smell their sweat. Behind them was the volcanic mountain, the destination to which the Helix Fossil was guiding them. The Helix Fossil emanated heat on Abba Jesus’s neck, and when the tribe saw the glowing emblem, they were captivated. They sent their Pokémon out to attack, and Abba Jesus and The Fonz fought their way through the crowd. Although they didn’t have much trouble, Abba Jesus loathed fire. The smell of his own burnt feathers reminded him of the traumatic ordeal of trying to save Abby.
All-Terrain Venomoth revved his engines and took them up the steep incline toward the top of the volcano. Halfway up the slope, a team of exiled scientists, covered in tribal tattoos and piercings, halted them, saying they would go no further. Their leader, Blaine, on the stage of an amphitheater, sat atop a throne made of baked clay bricks. He said, “Bring me that fossil.”
He sent a Rapidash and Arcanine to attack. They were both highly trained, completely immolated to the point where they were barely recognizable. Abba Jesus wouldn’t be able to touch them without burning off half of his flesh. But in that moment, the Archangel of Justice made his presence known. A single bolt of lightning struck the camp, killing the challengers instantly, leaving the scientists paralyzed.
Abba Jesus collected Blaine’s journals as the troubled scientist muttered something about the atrocities of civilization tainting this sacred land. He found the floor plan of their laboratory built into the side of the volcano. They entered a door behind the bookshelf and found the inner workings of where the group had tried to harness the miracles of nature. The writings showed that with proper preservation of a living being, such as a fossil, life could be brought back from the dead. They explored their way into the chamber where they could drop the fossil into a capsule and merge it with a stream of lava from the volcano. But the writings and the vibrations of the Helix Fossil told Abba Jesus to go forth with throwing it in, though he was leery of what the results would be. For some twelve years, he had carried the fossil and trusted it to guide him, and he could hardly fathom losing it. He feared it would spawn a fiery demon, all orchestrated by The False Prophet. Having come this far, he could only find out by throwing the fossil into the capsule.
Thus, he did so. The capsule shot down into the ground, and the ground shook, and a gust of wind blew through the tunnel. Various alarms on the system mainframe sounded, none of which he understood. An exhaust fan blasted them with heat, and as the capsule returned from the depths of the volcano, Abba Jesus braced himself, ready to be blasted with flames.
The lab fell silent. The door opened, and out popped a tiny blue creature burdened by a heavy shell. It was harmless, no bigger than one of his talons.
King Fonz laughed. “We came all this way for this little fella?”
Abba Jesus did not hear him. He stared into the eyes of the being and touched his wing to its tiny, precious hands. “Lord Helix,” he said. He felt the wet, cool touch of the creature, and he was comforted.
With their Lord Helix walking the earth, Abba Jesus knew there was only one task remaining for the squad: dismantle the Party and save Kanto.
They would have fled the laboratory and returned to the island, but as they looked to the exit, they saw one of the scientists slam the door shut. The tribe had figured that if they couldn’t out-brawl the squad, they could resort to keeping them prisoners for as long as possible. Abba Jesus did not know what to do. Air Jordan and the Archangel of Justice were outside the compound, but they didn’t seem to be coming for a rescue mission. They could search the lab, but there were hardly any surfaces to explore. As Pokémon, they could survive for weeks without food, and that ability was put to the test. In their pure boredom, Abba Jesus began to sit on the cold floor and imagine himself dueling with fire Pokémon in a flaming mansion. Perhaps driven by delusion due to starvation, he felt immersed in his fantasy world, practicing the most complex quick attacks while toughening up to fire. He could at least imagine himself carrying out his mission if he wasn’t going to finish it in reality—that was, until he saw the False Prophet spring upon him from the flames, and he was startled awake.
He saw All-Terrain Venomoth and King Fonz lying still on the floor, also withering away. Lord Helix stood around, calm as ever. He said, “Lord Helix, why don’t you get us out of here?”
A few moments later, he fainted from exhaustion.
He woke up on the shores of Cinnabar Island, alert and refreshed, with no idea how he had arrived there. King Fonz and All-Terrain Venomoth were there as well, also clueless about what had happened.
Abba Jesus came to realize that the power of Lord Helix had transported them to safety. With that in mind, he felt ready to track down Giovanni, then Blue.
He rallied his squad onto the back of Air Jordan, and they were off—this time, heading north to Viridian City.
They would be an unstoppable force: a god, a messiah, an angel, a king, a prince, and an all-terrain vehicle.
They arrived on the shores of Pewter City, where Abba Jesus saw his hometown for the first time in thirteen years. Civilians of the city had heard of the rising star Bird Jesus, come to save the land, but when they saw him in the flesh, none of them, not even his siblings, recognized him as Abba, for he had grown so large and strong since he had departed with Abby. Their attention wasn’t even set on the large bird in the group, so much as the gigantic Lapras trudging through the land, breaking every fence post and sign in his path, or the electric bird flying above them. The squad tore through the grasslands and went straight to Viridian City, where Giovanni had been trying to build a new Party headquarters.
The building was secluded from the rest of the city, surrounded by a moat with the bridge drawn. Even if Abba Jesus flew across, the steel doors were welded shut. He called out to anyone listening: “Let us in! Giovanni can’t hide forever.”
Giovanni himself appeared to them on a large screen built into the building’s upper deck. He said, “I’ll make a deal with you, gentlemen. We’ll open the door for you on one condition. Swear your undying allegiance to the Party and your support for democracy.”
“Never!”
The screen went blank.
Giovanni knew they had come for more than just a chitchat, and that if they swore their allegiance to the Party, their words would not be genuine. But members of the press were watching the squad try to enter. If the civilians of Kanto could witness Bird Jesus swearing his allegiance to the Party, their movement would be demoralized.
For six months, the squad remained locked out of the building. Air Jordan even walked up to the entrance and rammed his head into the door, but he didn’t even make a dent in the entrance. Members of the press had gathered outside the site and were waiting to broadcast the squad’s decision. People of Viridian were saying to go ahead and just claim their support for democracy—there was no other way to make progress. Thus, Abba Jesus flew up to the screen and said words he could barely fathom, even knowing they were a lie: “Okay, Giovanni, I swear my loyalty to the Party.”
With that, the bridge opened. Right there, in the wide-open lobby, Blue’s right-hand man was waiting for them with his Kangaskhan and Rhyhorn by his side, along with a dozen other beastly rock Pokémon. Abba Jesus had nothing to fear, as Air Jordan and the Archangel of Justice were able to fit through the wide opening. The Party members winced upon seeing these legendary Pokémon come through the door, but Giovanni remained confidently poised in the center of the hall. He said, “So, Bird Jesus…come to express your love for democracy?”
Abba Jesus smirked. “I lied. Anarchy forever.”
“We’ll just have to make you a political prisoner then.”
A massive brawl broke out. They were outnumbered two-to-one. Air Jordan and Lord Helix had water attacks that could wash away the hard surface of the rock Pokémons’ armor. At least that’s what Abba Jesus had predicted. But Lord Helix retracted into his shell and rolled away. Air Jordan shot a water blast to slow the enemies down, but then he was pounced on and knocked unconscious. All-Terrain Venomoth shot a few poison-laden harpoons before being taken down. King Fonz head-butted an enemy Nidoqueen into a wall and brawled with a fellow Nidoking, then fell alongside his friend. The Archangel of Justice sent a massive bolt of lightning through the entire hall, killing the Nidoqueen and Nidoking, but the other rock and ground Pokémon were completely immune to the attacks. After a few more failed attacks, the bird lost its charge and fluttered away.
Abba Jesus was baffled, left to duel the remaining Kangaskhan and Rhyhorn once again. Perhaps his faith in the Archangel of Justice was waning, but he still had faith in himself to beat these familiar foes. He circled high above them and swooped down with several fierce attacks. He took many beatings to the head in return, but his ferocity was enough to slay them. Just when he thought the battle was over, Giovanni called in a final challenger, a fully evolved Rhydon. Abba Jesus gathered his spirits and flew to the pit where a Dugtrio had been burrowed. He kicked up enough sand to leave the Rhydon blind and confused. They traded blows to near death, both of them crawling on the floor to land one last attack. On his last inch of life, Abba Jesus thought he would die alongside his foe. He cried out to Lord Helix one last time, “Helix, why have you forsaken me?”
Lord Helix wiggled out of his shell and made a charming sound, as if to assure him that everything was okay, everything here was happening for a reason. He created a cloud of mist that rained down holy water and revived the unconscious squad members, then his shell creaked and throbbed. He exploded into a fully evolved form, with a spiked shell and monstrous tentacles. Everyone was in awe, and they were certain this was a sign that they would be able to challenge Blue.
A group of civilians ran in and arrested Giovanni as he tried to flee. Peace had been brought to half of Kanto. It was time to take down Blue and bring peace to all of Kanto, to get revenge for the Bloody Sunday Massacre, to ensure the False Prophet would remain sealed away in a forgotten realm.
And for Abba Jesus—though he told no one—he wanted more than anything to avenge the death of Abby.
The squad set off for the Indigo Plateau where Blue was hiding out. Along Victory Road, King Fonz pushed several gigantic round boulders out of their path, though some were so large he would need to rest for an entire day before regaining the strength to resume pushing one out of their path. Abba Jesus often flew away from the path and perfected his ability to dive down and attack from the sky.
After six months of rugged travel through the caves of Victory Road, they came upon Indigo Plateau, so high up they could vaguely see all of Kanto through the mist of the sky. There was a large stone coliseum. The entrance was blocked by a large boulder, too large for King Fonz to move. Abba Jesus could see through a crack in the wall one final switch to release the entrance, but he was exhausted from having carried All-Terrain Venomoth, and the altitude was too high for him to fly over the wall. They chose to have All-Terrain Venomoth navigate up a small ramp and drive around the circumference of the stadium to see if there was another way in. King Fonz rode along, in case there were any stones to move.
On the backside of the stadium, they were so high up they could barely breathe. All-Terrain Venomoth drove slowly, for they were riding along a crumbled uneven walkway above the edge of the plateau, and they could not see anything but mist and darkness below. Just as they decided to turn back and tell the others there was nothing to find, a large dragon ascended from the clouds below—a vicious Dragonite. Both of them shuddered. They had heard fables of these dragon Pokémon that they had never believed.
King Fonz shouted, “ATV, punch it!”
He tried, but the Dragonite sprang upon them and swatted King Fonz off the stadium, into a free fall. All-Terrain Venomoth saw the Archangel of Justice swooping down to catch him, just as he fell to his own doom on the inner side of the stadium. He was alone in the arena, and the dragon came after him. He tried to outrun the beast, but it slammed into the ground in front of him. He had only downed a couple of opponents on his own during this entire journey, and now he most certainly was about to be killed by a dragon over twice his size in strength. He had no choice but to fight as valiantly as possible, so that the beast would only be able to kill him. He shot a poison laden harpoon which struck the beast in its arm. It recoiled and howled in pain, and in a fit of rage chased ATV through various obstacles within the arena, crushing them to pebbles. It felt the poison whittling away its strength and reacted by casting a magical barrier. The beast had never dealt with poison before. It had no instinct for how to react, and as it was distracted by the growing pain within its veins, ATV escaped to the perimeter. In one last effort to slay ATV, the dragon charged a hyper beam but missed its target, blasting apart the boulder that had blocked the others from entering.
Abba Jesus and the rest of the squad pushed past the rubble, to find ATV unscathed, smiling atop a slain Dragonite. Henceforth he would always be remembered as All-Terrain Venomoth the Dragon Slayer.
The Elite Four, Blue’s top Party members, began entering one by one with their teams of Pokémon. Lorelei, a sharply dressed executive, surfed in with five water and ice Pokémon. They brawled in the chaos of a Dewgong’s aurora beams by and another Lapras casting blizzards. A Jynx landed a few crushing ice punches. But the Archangel of Justice struck from above. A crushing thundershock surged through the misty air, killing all of their foes.
Bruno, a muscular dojo master, entered with two Onixes and three elite fighters: Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, and Machamp. The Archangel could do little to help. King Fonz and Abba Jesus brawled with the fighters, but they seemed to be overwhelmed. Lord Helix rose up from behind a boulder and gathered a storm of water. He blasted away the Onixes, then took aim at the Machamp. Even though Lord Helix was a god, a fully evolved Machamp was known to be a godlike fighter. The Machamp flexed his muscles, then charged at Lord Helix through a hard-hitting tidal wave, and he pounded Lord Helix into submission. His fist hit the shell of Lord Helix so hard, a burst of shrapnel cut the neck of the Machamp. Both of them died in the center of the arena. Abba Jesus cried out in fury, and the squad slew the remaining fighters. But there was no saving Lord Helix. Their savior had made the ultimate sacrifice.
Agatha, a quiet and frail woman, rode in on an Arbok, with a Golbat, Haunter, and two Gengars. The ghosts immediately cast a shroud of darkness upon the arena, and the squad was left in a daze of hallucinations. Without his long-lost companion, Digrat, Abba Jesus did not know how to fight against the ghosts. But the Archangel of Justice, also enraged by seeing Lord Helix die, swooped down and landed in the middle of the stadium. Many of the others laid eyes on the glorious electric bird for the first time. The Archangel shot Agatha’s team down one by one, killing each of them with ease.
Lance, the famed wizard who lived among dragons in the mountains, swooped down on a second Dragonite, along with a Gyarados, two Dragonairs, and an Aerodactyl. The Archangel continued his barrage of lightning storms, killing the Gyarados and two Dragonairs. As he charged a final lightning bolt to kill the Aerodactyl, Abba Jesus felt brave enough to aim an attack at the Dragonite. The dragon charged a hyper beam and shot it in the direction of Abba Jesus. But Air Jordan jumped forth and absorbed the fatal blast in order to keep his messiah alive. The Archangel and Abba Jesus struck back and killed the Dragonite.
They were in shambles. Their god and prince were dead. And Blue was only just arriving, with the six strongest Pokémon in the Party. The Pidgeot was an imitator of Abba Jesus. The Alakazam had powers that could bend steel beams. The Rhydon could smash boulders with one hand. The Arcanine had a fur coat as hot as the inside of a volcano. The Exeggutor was the size of a monstrous tree. The Blastoise had a shell as hard as diamond. Abba Jesus prayed for one final strike from the Archangel of Justice to bring Blue’s henchmen down. On cue, the sky darkened and a blinding bolt shot down to devastate them. The Pidgeotto, Alakazam, and Arcanine absorbed most of the shock and were killed instantly. But the Rhydon, immune to electricity, stood unaffected and took aim at King Fonz with a furious horn attack. King Fonz wielded the broken shell of Prince Jordan, fashioning it as a surfboard, and called forth a massive tidal wave channeled by the spirit of Lord Helix. A rush of water burst through the entrance to the coliseum and carried the Rhydon into the backside of the stadium. He slammed through the wall and fell to his death. At the same time, the Exeggutor was also resistant to the lightning attacks of the Archangel. Abba Jesus flew high above and, with the skills he had gained on Victory Road, dove with a fierce sky attack. He pierced the bark of the Exeggutor and tore it in half with a single attack.
Only the Blastoise remained, having survived the lightning attack inside his shell. He called forth a vicious blizzard, raining ice shards as heavy as bricks down on the squad. The Archangel of Justice was nowhere to be found in the sky. It seemed his electric energy was spent. Abba Jesus and King Fonz would have to finish the fight in their weakened state, but both of them already had their flesh torn by the ice shards. Abba Jesus kicked up several puffs of sand, attempting to confuse and misdirect the Blastoise. After the third strike of sand, a massive chunk of ice landed on Abba Jesus and fully entombed him. King Fonz and All-Terrain Venomoth clung to each other in the darkness, with no ability to see their opponent or an escape. They tried to comprehend how they could have come all this way only to die in battle and fail to save Kanto. King Fonz shouted for Bird Jesus to break free of the ice, but nothing happened. In the chaos of the ice storm, he managed to find a large chunk of the shell of Lord Helix. He ran a finger along its intricate design, wondering if their savior’s essence was still preserved in this shell, if it could be revived on Cinnabar Island once more. He vowed in his heart to take the shell there if a miracle could save them.
In that instant, the clouds parted. The Archangel of Justice dove through the storm and delivered a final thunderbolt directly upon the Blastoise and Blue, shaking the entire plateau. The recoil could be felt miles away, and the people throughout Kanto would remember the blinding flash in the sky for generations. With that, Blue and all of his henchmen were slain. The Party had been destroyed. And Kanto could live in peace once more.
Abba Jesus came close to death that day, but eventually he regained his strength and flew again. He was recuperated in the Pokémon Center on the Indigo Plateau, and when he departed, the civilians in Saffron City anticipated his arrival with a celebration that would span the entire city. But their hero did not arrive, for he had not yet completed his most important task.
He flew high above the clouds, past the eastern outskirts of the city, searching for a familiar amber-colored boulder. Even from a distance, he knew where it was. He could never forget the location or the event that had seared it into his memory. Perhaps all of his training and building of strength was meant to lead him to this very moment. He locked his sight on the boulder, dove forth with the most velocity he could manage, and rammed into it with the fiercest sky attack he had ever delivered. The boulder shattered and rained shiny pebbles all around. Abba Jesus gathered himself, struggling to get on his feet, and he peered at the inner contents as the dust settled. Just as he imagined, as he had believed since visiting Cinnabar Island…the inner depths of the rock showed the outline of a Charmeleon. The bones of his soulmate, Abby, had been fossilized here since her death some ten years before.
In a moment of silence and awe, he stared at the fossil, grazed his talons over the ornate detail of it—an object much larger and more magnificent than the Helix Fossil. It would also be much heavier, but that was a burden that he could ignore. He had made a promise some seventeen years ago—one that he was ready to fulfill.
“I will carry you, dear Abby.”
He gripped his talons into the rock and flapped with such fury that there were sandstorms miles away. The rock broke from its foundation, and he lifted it away. He had the strength, the willpower, and the belief that he could carry her the distance. He took off toward Cinnabar Island, where stone could be made into life again.
